Applications for that funding – available through the FRA’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements or CRISI program – are due by June 22, the agency said.
The FRA said this round of CRISI grants seeks to support projects that reduce rail congestion; jumpstart ridership growth on passenger railroads; improve regional railroad infrastructure; plus develop safety programs to prevent trespassing and reduce injuries and fatalities.
[Editor’s note: Drew Feeley, deputy administrator for the Federal Railroad Administration, outlined some of his agency’s key goals for the year in mid-February at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials 2026 Council on Rail Transportation Winter Legislative Meeting in Crystal City, VA.]
The upshot of that fiscal support via the CRISI program is to help “deliver a stronger railroad industry that will make transportation safer for families and more streamlined for companies moving freight on our rails,” explained David Fink, FRA’s administrator, in a statement.
“From the suburbs to rural communities, we want to equip our partners with the resources they need to modernize our rail infrastructure,” he said.
The agency added that, since 2017, the CRISI program has issued nearly $6 billion worth of grants to support the construction of safer rail infrastructure across the country.
