USDOT Names Winners of $1M ARPA-I Ideas Challenge

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently named the winners of its Advanced Research Projects Agency – Infrastructure or ARPA-I “Ideas and Innovation Challenge” contest.

The agency noted that the ARPA-I Ideas Challenge is a two-stage prize competition for innovators from across the private and public sectors; designed to create a portfolio of breakthrough ideas that will inform the research and development path forward for ARPA-I, USDOT, and the transportation sector.

During Stage 1, 15 semi-finalists were selected from 448 submissions from innovators across the country. In Stage 2, the semi-finalists submitted detailed proposals and from them, the “Final Four” contestants were selected to compete for cash prizes.

The final winners of the ARPA-I Ideas Challenge are:

  • 1st Place: Agentic AI for Freight ($300,000) – Adaptive, resilient middle-mile freight operations.
  • 2nd Place: BIO-BUILDS ($200,000) – Biologically innovative operations for lean, durable infrastructure.
  • 3rd Place: PRISM ($150,000) – Artificial intelligence or AI-powered real-time intelligence for shared mobility.
  • 4th Place: NavSentinel ($50,000) – Resilient, spoof-proof Global Navigation Satellite System or GNSS navigation receivers.

“Through the Ideas Challenge, we’ve empowered the next generation of American pioneers to develop bold, transformative solutions to modernize America’s infrastructure, enhance safety, and cut costs for American families,” noted Sean Duffy, USDOT secretary, in a statement. “USDOT is proud to congratulate today’s winners on their cutting-edge innovations.”

“The level of ingenuity and technical excellence displayed by all four finalists today is a testament to the incredible talent driving the American spirit of innovation,” added Seval Oz, USDOT’s assistant secretary of research and technology. “These teams brought a game-changing approach to our most critical infrastructure challenges.”
