USDOT Gives Approval to 180 Infrastructure Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently approved 180 infrastructure grants worth $3.2 billion from more than 3,200 projects that were awarded by the previous administration without project agreements.

USDOT added in a statement that it has approved 329 grants so far this year.

Those approved grants include a wide range of modal administration programs, from airport improvement grants to rail, port, and highway infrastructure initiatives. They are:

  • Federal Aviation Administration: $277.1 million for 33 projects via the Airports Terminal Program; $1.95 million from three projects via the Airport Improvement Program..
  • Federal Highway Administration: $1.4 billion for 17 projects via the Bridge Investment Program; $342,000 for one project via the National Scenic Byway Program.
  • Federal Railroad Administration: $221 million for six projects via the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program; $4 million for two projects via the Corridor Identification and Development program; $30 million for one project via the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail program; $25 million for 14 projects via the Railroad Crossing Elimination program; and $2.4 million for one project under the agency’s “Special Transportation Circumstances” endeavor.
  • Federal Transit Administration: $494 million for 30 projects via the Low or No Emission bus grant program; $3.5 million for six projects via the Tribal Transit program.
  • Maritime Administration: $70 million  for two projects via the Port Infrastructure Development Program; $38 million for one project via the agency’s Transportation Demonstration Program.

The recent grant awards also include funding via programs overseen directly by the USDOT’s Office of the Secretary, including:

  • Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development or BUILD grant program: $60 million for four projects.
  • Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects or INFRA grant program: $262 million for six projects.
  • National Infrastructure Project Assistance or “Mega” grant program: $9.9 million for one project.
  • Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program: $189 million for five projects.
  • Safe Streets and Roads for All of the “SS4A” grant program: $14.6 million for six projects.
  • Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation or SMART grant program: $90.6 million for 27 projects.
  • Payments for Small Community Air Service Development Program: $12 million for 14 projects.

Some 29 state departments of transportation received grants for the 50 projects they directly oversee within those 180 grant approvals by USDOT.

The single largest grant within those 180 is for a state DOT project; $550 million for breaking ground on Alabama’s I-10 Mobile River bridge and Bayway multimodal project overseen by the Alabama Department of Transportation, according to USDOT.
