The Transportation Security Administration is extending its facemask mandate across all transportation networks throughout the United States – including at airports, onboard commercial aircraft, on over-the-road buses, and on commuter bus and rail systems – through January 18, 2022.

TSA initially implemented its transportation facemask requirement on February 1 and later extended that mandate through September 13.
The agency emphasized in a statement that existing exemptions to its facemask requirement for travelers under two years of age and for those with certain disabilities remain in place.
The existing civil penalty fine structure will also remain in place, which starts at $250 and rises to $1,500 for repeat offenders who violate TSA’s facemask requirement.
The Centers for Disease Control updated its related facemask guidance on June 10, noting that there is no need to wear masks in outdoor areas of transportation conveyances – if such outdoor areas exist on the conveyance – or while outdoors at transportation hubs. However, the CDC continues to recommend the wearing of masks in such areas by those not fully vaccinated.
