The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently published interim revisions to its Manual for Bridge Element Inspection, 2nd Edition, originally published in 2019.

That manual – designed for use by state departments of transportation and other agencies that perform element-level bridge inspections – serves as a reference for standardized element definitions, element quantity calculations, condition state definitions, element feasible actions, and inspection conventions.
Its goal is to capture the condition of bridges in a simple, effective way that can be standardized nationwide, while providing enough flexibility to be adapted by both large and small agencies.
The 2025 Interim Revisions to the manual contain changes to several parts – including Section 2: Element Location Matrix; Section 3: Detailed Element Descriptions; and Appendix C: Element Groupings – along with new or revised descriptions for the following critical elements typically found in large bridges.
AASHTO noted that it is necessary to have the 2025 interim revisions, as well as the 2022 and 2024 interim revisions, to have all current specification information where bridge element inspections are concerned.
