The Nevada Department of Transportation and Visit Carson City are inviting Nevada school children from kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in an active transportation safety art contest that will feature one winner’s art on a Carson City mural.

The contest invites students to submit original drawings by September 12 to Nevada DOT’s Active Transportation Office that help raise awareness of road safety.
Artwork can highlight walking or biking to school, or using skates, skateboards or wheelchairs, with bonus points awarded for artwork highlighting the health and safety benefits of active transportation, the agency said.
The grand prize artwork will be painted on a mural in Carson City during the Carson City Mural and Music Festival in late September.
Nevada DOT said in a statement that all of the submitted artwork must be drawn by hand – not computer or photo-generated – in watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic oil paint, marker, pen or crayon on an 11×17 or similar size piece of paper.
The art contest is part of Nevada’s Safe Routes to School program, which provides training, infrastructure and resources for elementary schoolchildren to safely walk and bicycle to school.
Across the country, state departments of transportation support a broad selection of student art contests aimed at highlighting various sectors of the transportation industry.
For example, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Michigan Department of Transportation sponsor a yearly “Paint the Plow” competition that highlight the importance of snowplow operations during wintertime.
And the North Carolina Department of Transportation is one of several state DOTs that sponsors regional student aviation art contests on an annual basis; sending those winners on to compete in a national aviation art contest hosted by the National Association of State Aviation Officials and the National Aeronautic Association.
