The U.S. Maritime Administration – known as MARAD – recently issued $35.1 million worth of grants to support critical infrastructure investments and workforce development efforts at 45 shipyards across 24 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

That funding comes through MARAD’s Small Shipyard Grant Program, which aims to support small shipyard projects that make capital and related improvements or provide training for workers in shipbuilding, ship repair, and associated industries.
MARAD noted that grants are capped at 75 percent of the project’s estimated cost and are available to facilities with fewer than 1,200 production employees.
“Small shipyards across America were once the backbone of our nation’s maritime industry,” said Sean Duffy, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, in a statement. “This program will fund cutting-edge equipment, major facility upgrades, and new training programs for the next generation of maritime workers.”
“America’s small shipyards drive our maritime economy and strengthen our national readiness,” said added Stephen Carmel, MARAD’s administrator.
“Across the nation, shipyard workers bring the skill, innovation, and technical expertise that build, repair, and launch the vessels America depends on,” he said. “These investments support the Maritime Action Plan and will strengthen America’s maritime future for years to come.”
