The Federal Transit Administration issued a $40.4 million grant to the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County to fund the Virginia Street Bus Rapid Transit or BRT extension project in Reno, Nevada.

The agency said in a statement that this transit infrastructure project will improve mobility and transit service in the Virginia Street corridor by offering faster, more reliable, and higher frequency bus service, along with safer and more convenient access to bus stations.
FTA noted that this grant funding comes from its Capital Investment Grants or CIG program and will help the Virginia Street BRT extension project expand the service by 1.8 miles from its current northern end-point in downtown Reno to the University of Nevada/Reno.
The agency added that the project also upgrades 1.4 miles of the existing BRT system from downtown Reno south to the Midtown District. The total project cost is $114.9 million including a request of $40.4 million in federal transit infrastructure grants, FTA added.
