The Federal Highway Administration extended the comment period for proposed Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices revisions to May 14; a 60-day extension that the agency said allows for additional public participation in the MUTCD’s first major update in more than 10 years.

“This important document will set the tone for the future of our transportation system for the years ahead,” noted Stephanie Pollack, deputy FHWA administrator, in a statement.
“We want to ensure our stakeholders have ample opportunity to address the diverse needs of travelers nationwide,” she said.
The agency added in a February 2 federal register notice that this extension is “in response to stakeholder requests” for additional time to address the scope and complexity of proposed MUTCD amendments.
Created in 1935, the MUTCD is the national standard for traffic signs, signals and pavement markings for use on all public streets and highways.
The FHWA noted in its original federal register notice published December 14, 2020, that its proposed MUTCD changes are “intended to update the technical provisions to reflect advances in technologies and operational practices, incorporate recent trends and innovations, and set the stage for automated driving systems as those continue to take shape.”
The agency added that its proposed changes – designated as the 11th edition of the MUTCD – would also “promote uniformity and incorporate technology advances” in the traffic control device application and, ultimately, improve and promote the safe and efficient utilization of roads.
