The Federal Transit Administration noted in a statement on Oct. 22 that the California Public Utilities Commission – responsible for seven different public transit agencies – and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation obtained federal certification of their rail transit State Safety Oversight or SSO programs.
The California Public Utilities Commission is responsible for providing safety oversight seven light rail transit agencies, including: San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART district heavy rail, light rail, and automated guideway systems; the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency light rail, cable car, and streetcar systems; the Sacramento Regional Transit District light rail system; the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority light rail system; the San Diego Metropolitan Transportation System light rail system; the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority light rail and heavy rail systems; and the North County Transit District light rail trolley system.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is responsible for providing safety oversight of the Oklahoma City streetcar system, FTA noted.
With those certifications, 27 of 30 states and the 31 SSO programs covered by this rule are now in compliance, the agency said.
The FTA reiterated in a statement that Federal law requires states with rail transit systems to obtain FTA certification of their SSO Programs by April 15, 2019. By federal law, the deadline cannot be waived or extended.
And, if a state fails to meet that deadline, FTA stressed that “it is prohibited by law from obligating any new funds to transit agencies within that state until certification is achieved.”
