The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, an equal opportunity employer, seeks to hire up to two full-time deputy directors to work directly with its executive director at its headquarters in Washington, DC.
AASHTO’s deputy directors would collaborate with the executive director in overseeing the successful management of the association, helping plan, organize, coordinate, and lead the staff, programs, and activities under their purview.
Specific responsibilities will consist of a subset of the priority areas and responsibilities described below, specified to the particular deputy director position upon offer of employment:
- Assists in the effective implementation of the association’s mission and strategic plan, both internally and externally, working closely with the executive director, AASHTO senior staff and their respective divisions, AASHTO’s Board of Directors, Executive Committee, or Strategic Management Committee as applicable.
- Serves as a leader, mentor and champion to the division directors within their purview, assisting them in the achievement of their division goals and overall association goals, and providing counsel regarding the effective management of the division’s operations as needed.
- Strengthens AASHTO’s position as the source of technical, legislative, operational, regulatory, or research expertise for the transportation industry, and represents AASHTO with the related external agencies and organizations under their purview.
- Serves as an effective spokesperson before assigned venues and audiences, including state departments of transportation, Congress, state legislatures, government agencies, other public forums and the media to further public comprehension of AASHTO’s technical standards or official policy positions and to promote the adoption and implementation of technical standards or policy positions favorable to the association’s members.
Successful candidates are required to demonstrate a minimum of 15 years of progressively increasing responsibility in an organizational management role is required. Leadership experience in a trade association or in the transportation sector is preferred.
This position requires a broad understanding of transportation issues at the federal, state, or local level of government, so a sound understanding of transportation technical standards and the legislative and regulatory process at the federal and state levels is also preferred, with related management, business and partnership development skills are required.
An advanced level of effective communication, management and business practices, is essential to this position. A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a business, public administration, public policy, engineering-related field, or another field related to AASHTO’s core operations.
