The New Jersey Department of Transportation has created a new Division of Transportation Permitting that aligns with Executive Order 5 issued by Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) (above at right) in January as part of a broader effort to simplify and modernize the state’s regulatory processes.

The new Division of Transportation Permitting – which will fall under New Jersey DOT’s Community Programs and Resources – brings all of New Jersey DOT’s permitting functions under one centralized unit.

In a statement, Gov. Sherrill said this new division “will create a more efficient and predictable permitting process – saving both the department and applicants’ time and money while helping move projects forward more quickly.”
Priya Jain, commissioner of the New Jersey DOT, added that the creation of this new division is one result of a “comprehensive review” of permits and approvals conducted earlier this year to identify outdated or duplicative requirements.
It is also one of several changes that went into effect this year to streamline New Jersey DOT’s permitting process, she added.
For example, this summer, the agency’s Major Access Permits process and Outdoor Advertising Permitting process became fully electronic.
Concurrently, New Jersey DOT also eliminated its Minor Access and Highway Occupancy Permitting backlog of 500 permits and helped launch an electronic “Permitting Dashboard” that involved 10 pilot projects as part of an artificial intelligence testing effort to augment permitting intake.
