Bridge Inspection Guide for Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has published new guidelines that address the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems or UAS – also known as drones – to conduct bridge inspections; specifically to ensure the quality and consistency of element-level bridge data collected by drones.

AASHTO noted that drones are increasingly being used to supplement bridge inspection efforts due to their ability to collect visual information in areas that are challenging to access safely and economically.

As a result, the new guidelines provide information and best practices for developing UAS-based bridge inspection programs and are intended for use by state departments of transportation, bridge owner agencies, and other organizations.
