AASHTO re:source is a technical service program offered by AASHTO that provides services and tools through three major programs: the Laboratory Assessment Program, the Proficiency Sample Program, and the AASHTO Accreditation Program.

Through these activities, sharing knowledge, and training events, AASHTO re:source evaluates testing competency, promotes continual improvement, and instills confidence in the laboratories and specifiers that use its programs.

As a full-time position, Materials Laboratory Auditors conduct on-site and remote assessments at construction materials testing laboratories in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and Canada.

During an assessment, auditors evaluate the technical capabilities of testing agencies and review their quality management system for compliance to national standards. Subsequently, auditors travel between 16 and 20 weeks a year, in two-to-three-week increments.

When not traveling for assessments, auditors perform pre- and post-assessment activities, provide technical support to staff and customers, assist with internal and external training activities, and support other aspects of the program in meaningful ways.

They also participate in an extensive training period that lasts for approximately one year. Upon the successful completion of the training period, they are then eligible for promotion. AASHTO stressed that no previous auditing or CMT experience is required for the auditor position as its training program teaches candidates everything they need to know about construction materials testing, accreditation requirements, customer service, and auditing.

The qualifications to apply for the auditor position include: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in science or engineering; ability to travel independently at least 16 weeks per year; ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license to operate motor vehicles; the ability to drive up to 450 miles per day, on occasion; transport an assessment kit weighing approximately 15 pounds one to two times per day; and live within a reasonable commuting distance of AASHTO’s Frederick office.
