AASHTO re:source – a division of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials – provides services and tools through three major programs: the Laboratory Assessment Program or LAP, the Proficiency Sample Program or PSP, and the AASHTO Accreditation Program.

Materials Laboratory Auditors, known at AASHTO as “Laboratory Assessors,” conduct on-site and remote assessments at construction materials testing or CMT laboratories in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, and Canada.

During an assessment, Laboratory Assessors evaluate the technical capabilities of testing agencies and review their quality management system for compliance to national standards. Laboratory Assessors travel between 16 and 20 weeks a year, in two-to-three-week periods.

When not traveling for assessments, Laboratory Assessors perform pre- and post-assessment activities, provide technical support to staff and customers, assist with internal and external training activities, and support other aspects of the program in meaningful ways.

Auditors participate in an extensive training period that lasts for approximately one year and are designated Laboratory Assessors–Trainees up until the successful completion of the training period, at which point they are then eligible for promotion.

Candidates for this position must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in science or engineering; strong oral communication and technical writing skills; a willingness to travel extensively for at least 16 weeks per year; hold a valid state driver’s license to operate motor vehicles; be capable of driving up to 450 miles per day; and transport an assessment kit weighing approximately 20 pounds.

No previous experience is required; however some previous experience in construction materials testing, laboratory environment, or customer service related role may provide helpful learning foundation for this role.
