The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement on May 15 it plans to award $779 million in supplemental funding for infrastructure grants to 127 airports in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
This “supplemental” funding is in addition to the $3.31 billion already awarded via the agency’s Airport Improvement Program during fiscal year 2018, the FAA added, and also follows $205 million of initial grants from that supplemental funding made late last year.

The agency said projects selected to receive this supplemental funding include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, plus maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals. The construction and equipment supported by this funding aims to increase airport safety, emergency response capabilities, capacity, and could support further potential growth and development within each airport’s region, the FAA emphasized.
The agency added that Congress provided this supplemental funding via the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, passed in March of 2018, and it later published a Federal Register notice in July of last year to explain the statutory rules, evaluation criteria, and the submission steps for states to apply for those grants.
It added that the remainder of the $1 billion Congress set aside for this tranche of supplemental airport infrastructure funding will be awarded during fiscal years 2019 and 2020, based on requests submitted through October 31 last year.
