The Wyoming Department of Transportation and its contractors expect to reopen the westbound lanes of the I-80 tunnel near Green River by the end of November; a tunnel severely damaged by a fire caused by a 26-vehicle crash in February.

The agency said construction crews have completed the concrete repair work on the tunnel liner, curb, and roadway pavement inside the westbound tunnel and are now focused on cleaning and sealing the tunnel’s joints this week.
In addition, preparatory work for the installation of the lighting is also close to completion.
Road striping, guardrails, and temporary traffic signage will be installed over the coming weeks, with WYDOT expecting to meet the end-of-November reopening date, barring any unforeseen delays due to weather and other variables.
The agency added that while the westbound tunnel will reopen to traffic for the winter, it will be with reduced speeds and without the completion of all the lighting infrastructure.
“We should have about half the lights installed, so for safety reasons, we have elected to reduce the speed through the westbound tunnel,” noted Peter Stinchcomb, a WYDOT District 3 construction engineer, in a statement. “But we wanted to get traffic moving in the westbound tunnel, so we wouldn’t have to run head-to-head traffic in the eastbound tunnel over the winter.”
Once the westbound tunnel is reopened, locals and interstate traffic should be prepared for an estimated weeklong detour of eastbound traffic through Green River as crews remove concrete barriers, reset cable barriers, and remove all the traffic control in the eastbound lanes.
