The Utah Department of Transportation recently installed new radar-equipped wildlife crossing signs along a one-mile section of the State Route 73 highway near Eagle Mountain; an area that’s witnessed nearly 100 deer-related collisions over the last four years.
The signs are equipped with light emitting diodes or LEDs that flash when wildlife are detected in the area, providing a visual warning to motorists. Utah DOT said it is pilot-testing these radar-equipped signs along the Eagle Mountain highway and may expand their use based on the pilot program’s results. The agency added that this is the first time it has used radar-equipped signs to reduce wildlife collisions.
