In July 1973, the California Department of Transportation – known as Caltrans – came into being to unify a wide range of transportation functions across the state under a single entity.

To celebrate its “Golden Anniversary,” Caltrans has updated its Caltrans History page on its website with new content that traces the roots of the Golden State’s transportation system from 1895, when the Bureau of Highways was formed, to the present day – chronicling key developments and noteworthy projects along the way.
Those achievements are also tallied in a new video narrated by Caltrans Director Tony Tavares.
“We’re taking some time on this anniversary to let you know that our work to provide a safe, equitable, and reliable transportation system has only just started,” Tavares said.
“This golden anniversary honors our current culture and values, which reflect a department more prepared than ever to face the challenges of the future,” he added. “We are now inspired to deliver even more positive results in the next 50 years.”
