Since 2002, the Street Smart program has worked to raise awareness about pedestrian and bicycle safety in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia; highlighting enforcement of the laws that protect people walking and biking.
The 2019 regional Street Smart event – hosted on behalf of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation in the nation’s capital – focused on ways to reduce pedestrian and bicyclists fatalities, which increased in 2018, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
