Video: DDOT Begins Work on $500M DC PLUG Project

Utility work is often a challenge for local residents, but local electric utility company Pepco – a division of Exelon – and the District Department of Transportation are partnering to ensure that a
$500 million DC Power Line Undergrounding or DC PLUG project goes smoothly.

The PLUG project will relocate up to 30 of the District’s most vulnerable overhead power lines underground over the course of six to eight years.

A joint effort between the D.C. Public Service Commission, the Office of the Mayor, the City Council, Pepco, DDOT and other government agencies, the DC PLUG project is ultimately expected to decrease storm-related power outages by 94 percent for a majority of city residents.

District DOT Director Jeff Marootian said, “DDOT will be helping to do the construction work here in conjunction with Pepco. We will be helping support their effort to place overhead powerlines underground and then resurface the roadway when that work is complete.”
