USDOT Issues Over $1B in SS4A Road Grant Funding

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently issued more than $1 billion in “Safe Streets and Roads for All” or SS4A grants to localities covering 297 projects across 50 states, Puerto Rico, and tribal lands – funding aimed at upgrading hazardous intersections; eliminating dangerous railroad crossings; expanding truck parking; and strengthening emergency response services.

The package also includes $335 million in investments to support post-crash care and pre-hospital blood transfusion capabilities, the agency said.

USDOT noted in a statement that the SS4A funding offers two types of grants: Planning and Demonstration Grants and Implementation Grants. Planning and Demonstration Grants support the development, completion, or enhancement of a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, while Implementation Grants fund projects or strategies aligned with an existing action plan to address roadway safety challenges, the agency said.

USDOT noted that SS4A grant recipients are selected through a collaborative process led by three USDOT modal administrations: the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Transit Administration.

This round of SS4A grants follows the disbursement in late December 2025 of nearly $1 billion in SS4A funding to localities covering 521 projects in 48 states and Puerto Rico, along with projects overseen by 19 tribal nations.

USDOT said in a statement at the time that those projects aim to improve intersection safety, build roundabouts, upgrade sidewalks, and strengthen emergency response services – making streets safer in communities across the country, with funding supporting projects overseen by cities, towns, municipalities, and other local government entities.
