USDOT Issues $488M in BUILD Grants to 30 Projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently issued $488 million from Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development or BUILD grant program to 30 infrastructure projects across the country – nine of them overseen by state departments of transportation.

The USDOT said in a statement that road and bridge projects received 77 percent of those BUILD grants, with 10 percent awarded to transit upgrades to deliver safe, reliable, and accessible commuter networks.  

Waterway projects received more than $35 million primarily for port improvements, with nearly $3 million in grants supporting rail networks to enhance multimodal surface transportation.  

USDOT added that, for this round of BUILD grants, funding is evenly distributed between urban and rural communities, with each receiving $244 million in awards.

The nine state DOTs receiving awards are:

  • Arkansas Department of Transportation: $24.4 million for the Springdale Northern Bypass—Final Phase.
  • Maryland Transit Administration, a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation: $2.8 million for the Washington County Bus Facility Project.
  • Mississippi Department of Transportation: $21.3 million for Enhancing Safety and Mobility on US 49 and MS 13 in Simpson County.
  • Montana Department of Transportation: $25 million for the Brockway West Project.
  • Oklahoma Department of Transportation: $20 million for the Hochatown Community Access and Pedestrian Safety Project.
  • South Dakota Department of Transportation: $22 million for the US 85 Belle Fourche River Bridge Replacement Project.
  • Vermont Agency of Transportation: $22.7 million for the Winooski River Bridge Replacement Project.
  • West Virgina Department of Transportation: $24.8 million for its Statewide Truck Parking Project.
  • Wyoming Department of Transportation: $10 million for Beartooth Highway Segment 4 Engineering and Design.
