AASHTO Journal - Swallow Named New Leader of Nevada DOT

The board of the Nevada Department of Transportation this week confirmed Gov. Steve Sisolak’s (D) recommendation of Kristina Swallow as the next state transportation director. She is the former program manager for the City of Las Vegas, in charge of the engineering team responsible for delivering public works projects and sanitary sewer collection system planning, among other duties.

Swallow, who has served as president of the American Society of Civil Engineers since March of last year, holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in civil engineering.

Swallow’s engineering career includes a five-year stint owning her own consulting business – AVP Consulting Inc. – that provided flood control, traffic impact, and air quality analyses and studies to support land development projects throughout the Las Vegas Valley. She also spent three years in Washington D.C. as a transportation policy advisor to Sen. Tom Udall, D-New Mexico, providing analysis and recommendations on a number of key legislation packages including the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century or MAP-21 and the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bills.

Sisolak noted in a tweet on Jan. 31 following the board’s vote. “Kristina’s distinguished career as a civil engineer and public servant make her the ideal choice to guide Nevada’s transportation infrastructure into the future.”
