SCDOT Receives $200M for Bridge Program Updates

The South Carolina Department of Transportation recently received approval to update its bridge program; an update that includes the direct infusion of an additional $200 million following the appropriation from the state legislature.

The agency added that the current level of funding for its bridge program sits at $239 million, so the additional state funding increases the total program for bridge replacements and rehabilitations for the coming year to $439 million.

The additional funding will be used to advance projects on SCDOT’s planning list.

While the current budget will not cover all the projects on the new bridge program map, the agency said it still plans to advance them in order of priority and as funding becomes available.

“Thanks to the leadership of Governor [Henry] McMaster and the General Assembly and their continued investment in South Carolina’s infrastructure, SCDOT is expediting progress and restoring even more bridges in our state,” noted Justin Powell, SCDOT secretary, in a statement. “Our team is already hard at work putting this money to use to help people and goods move through South Carolina.”

SCDOT also noted that, as a part of its 10-year plan, construction is underway or complete on 416 bridges and is on track to complete the 530 bridges outlined in the plan.

The additional funding from the state legislature will allow SCDOT to accelerate and expand the bridge program beyond goals identified in the 10-year plan, the agency said.
