Pre-Build Work Begins for Key Bridge Replacement

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) – a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation – recently won approval for a $75 million general engineering consultant services contract; allowing it to start pre-build work on the Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement project.

That contract with the Bridging Maryland Partnership – a joint venture of WSP, RK&K and JMT – covers the planning, engineering, construction management and program support services to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after a container ship struck a key structural pylon in March 2024

This follows the approval of a $73 million contract in August 2024 with Kiewit Infrastructure Co. to undertake the complete design of a replacement for the structure.

MDTA noted that the Bridging Maryland Partnership will serve as its engineering representative for the rebuild project – ensuring the accelerated design and construction process remains on track – and the agency expects pre-construction activities will take place both on land and on the water beginning over the next few months. Those activities, MDTA noted, will provide vital datapoints to inform design and construction decisions.

“This is a monumental project for the region, and we’re committed to keeping the public informed every step of the way,” said Maryland DOT Secretary Paul Wiedefeld in a statement. “These early activities are crucial in setting the foundation for a safe, efficient and sustainable bridge for the future.”
