This marking project – expected to finish up by the end of April – will install 100 official Route 66 pavement markings at 50 locations across Oklahoma to enhance on-the-ground visibility of the historic corridor, which turns 100 years old in November.

The agency said each of those locations will feature the recognizable Route 66 badge and will be customized to reflect its specific community, with the location name prominently displayed in the top bar of the emblem.

The Oklahoma DOT noted in a statement that the total cost of this marking project is $341,000, with the majority of funding made possible through a 2024 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, with Oklahoma DOT contributing an additional $91,000.

The Oklahoma DOT added that communities interested in additional Route 66 pavement markings beyond the 50 selected locations may apply through a designated submission, though the agency noted that approved applicants will be responsible for funding the cost of any additional markings.

The Oklahoma DOT pointed out that this marking initiative represents a coordinated effort to create high-visibility Route 66 identifiers across Oklahoma, as Oklahoma contains the most drivable miles of the iconic corridor.
