“We often hear of state department of transportation workers who go above and beyond their duties, helping those in need; like aiding stranded drivers during major snowstorms or after crashes,” explained Anya Kardos, co-host the NYSDOT’s “The DOT POD” podcast.

“In this episode we’re sharing the incredible stories of NYSDOT employees who came to the aid of animals in distress – including one worker who helps to provide comfort to shelter pets as they search for their forever homes,” she said.

Kardos noted that NYSDOT workers have been credited with saving turtles, birds, kittens, even a baby pig.

This particular episode focuses on how NYSDOT workers rescued an injured baby deer or fawn and an injured hawk; tending to the wounded creatures until animal control units arrived on the scene or they could be safely transported to an animal sanctuary.

“These stories are a reminder that even in the midst of our busy daily commutes or construction, there is definitely a world of kindness out there,” noted Kardos.

Several state departments of transportation produce a podcast that touch on a wide variety of topics.

For example, the Michigan Department of Transportation recently delved into how the agency uses pavement performance measures to help extend the lifespan of roadways statewide on its “Talking Michigan Transportation” podcast.

Meanwhile, the “Extra Mile” podcast – started in 2021 by the Mississippi Department of Transportation – provides insights into state infrastructure issues, as well as many cultural and historical topics.

One recent “Extra Mile”  episode featured an interview with Mississippi DOT Executive Director Brad White about the outcomes of the state’s 2025 legislative session, toll scams, and National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The “On the Road” podcast hosted by the Arizona Department of Transportation recently offered tips on summer travel safety, while the “Ahead of the Curve” podcast – launched in 2022 by the Georgia Department of Transportation – recently delved into the state’s now 18-year-old 511 travel information service.
