TRB said the Sharon D. Banks Award for Humanitarian Leadership in Transportation is presented every two years. It is given to individuals whose accomplishments go beyond general managerial excellence by emulating Banks’ caring nature and depth of character by making a significant difference in the lives of those who use, deliver, or support transportation services.

TRB established this award in 2002 to honor Banks, who served as general manager of AC Transit in Oakland, CA, from 1991 to 1999 and as chairwoman of the TRB Executive Committee in 1998. She passed away in 1999.
The W. N. Carey, Jr., Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership and provided distinguished service to TRB, even if they have not been personally active in transportation research.
Originally created by the TRB executive committee in 1972 as the Highway Research Board Distinguished Service Award, it was renamed in 1987 to honor W. N. Carey, Jr., who served with distinction as the TRB Executive Director from 1967 until 1980.
The Roy W. Crum Distinguished Service Award is a lifetime achievement honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to fundamental or developmental transportation-related research. It is named after Crum, who taught civil engineering at Iowa State University and served as engineer of materials and tests for the Iowa State Highway Commission until, in 1928, he was named director of the Highway Research Board in Washington, D.C.; holding that post until his death in 1951.
The Robert E. Skinner, Jr., Distinguished Transportation Research Management Award is also a lifetime achievement honor for individuals working in management, administration, promotion, and implementation of transportation research. Recipients should have led major research programs that have had a lasting impact on the field, TRB noted.
Established in 2021 by the TRB Executive Committee, the award is named for Skinner, who served TRB for more than 30 years, including as its executive director from 1994 to 2015.
