The Nebraska Department of Transportation released its 36-page 2018 Annual Report on October 17, which highlighted a number of transportation system improvement efforts being undertaken by the agency – especially ones aimed at improving freight throughput and truck parking.

The agency noted in a statement that Nebraska’s crash rate of 1.7 per 100 million vehicle miles held steady for the fourth year and remained below the national average. A new tactic deployed in 2018 now allows mandatory Driver’s Motor Vehicle Crash Reports to be submitted to the Nebraska DOT electronically rather than on paper.
“With more than 50,000 reports submitted annually, the system leverages efficiencies and innovation in technology to improve customer service,” the department said.
Other key transportation improvements deployed by the Nebraska DOT in 2018 include:
- The development of a first-of-its-kind Nebraska State Freight Plan to help the agency and its partners leverage resources to reduce the cost of doing business in Nebraska.
- Creating a parking lot that can accommodate 100 to 200 trucks on state property near Big Springs within the Interstate 80/US-138 interchange.
- Signing a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Highway Administration for categorical exclusion or CE, meaning that the Nebraska DOT will assume environmental-review responsibilities for federally-funded CE projects so as to create efficiencies that deliver benefits to the state more quickly and economically.
- Launching a “Your Safe Travel Is Our Business” outreach campaign in December 2018 that featured local Nebraska DOT snowplow drivers on billboards. The campaign also featured safety messages, including “Respect the Plow,” and “Respect the Snowfighters,” placed at four locations, strategically located along high-traffic corridors on I-80 and US-34.
