While the web address for DriveNC.gov won’t change, the software platform behind it will be replaced – thereby providing new features for the public and other enhancements for the NCDOT employees operating it.
The agency noted that DriveNC.gov users must now resubscribe for email alerts after the new system went live on May 27.

“For more than 25 years, our current system has reliably served travelers across North Carolina,” said Kelly Wells, traveler information engineer for NCDOT’s Traffic Systems Operations Unit, in a statement. “This new platform will provide even greater capabilities to support our travelers and our partners.”
She added that almost 1.4 million people used DriveNC.gov in 2025, totaling about 2.2 million website visits, and that the current system’s automatic alerts to commercial maps – such as Waze, Apple Maps, and Google Maps – will continue with the new system.
New DriveNC.org features include:
- The ability to create specific email alerts for traffic disruptions on any customized route or area;
- The ability to view messages currently displayed on overhead digital highway signs;
- The ability to watch live video from 1,100 highway traffic cameras; and
- The option to download a free app, called “DriveNC” for iPhones or Android devices.
NCDOT that, when visiting the revamped DriveNC.gov after May 27, users can select “New Features” in the top navigation bar for some helpful tutorials.
Other state departments of transportation are making similar upgrades to their traveler website systems.
For example, the Colorado Department of Transportation recently made two major updates to its “COtrip” platforms.
The first enables motorists to find out about traffic impacts or closures along their favorite routes by enabling push notifications – meaning they do not need to open the COtrip Planner mobile application.
The second upgrade expanded language support on COtrip.org so as to make Colorado’s road and travel information more accessible for all motorists, the agency said.
