Elon University’s School of Communications in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and others will be hosting “Elon Drone Day” on November 8 – a free event aimed at answering questions regarding regulations, safety, and overall use and other trends in the drone industry.

“Elon Drone Day aims to provide a platform to help share knowledge within the drone community on how to fly safely by following the Federal Aviation Administration guidelines,” noted Randy Piland, a senior lecturer at the school who has promoted drones and related safety regulations for the past five years and the event’s chief organizer, in a statement.
“This is open to anyone curious about how to consider drone use in their professions,” he added.
Registration is required to attend this program, which will feature conversations with Federal Aviation Administration safety officials, NCDOT aviation leaders, drone delivery specialists, and other experts. In addition to onsite panels and lectures, there will be displays and activities as well as a drone demonstration.
“NCDOT is committed to innovation and prioritizing safety, and the use of drones has greatly improved our methods for serving the citizens of our state,” noted T.C. Freeman, an aviation safety specialist with NCDOT’s Division of Aviation.
“Events and programs like this are a boon for the leaders of the next generation and a great way to help us ensure people are operating drones safely and responsibly,” he said.
In a related note, NCDOT’s aviation division recently won three awards from the North Carolina Airport Association.
Bobby Walston – who has served as NCDOT’s aviation director for nearly 30 years – received the 2021 Willard G. Plentl Aviation Professional of the Year Award in recognition of his service to North Carolina’s aviation sector.
NCDOT’s aviation division also received the 2020 President’s Award a year late as the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the association’s 2020 conference.
