The agency said in a statement that its IMPACT tool is designed to support research, raise awareness about road safety, and enhance public safety initiatives throughout Massachusetts.

MassDOT added that the portal features an interactive dashboard that allows users to examine crash data by municipality, region, and mode of travel, including specific categories such as motorcycle crashes. Additionally, the portal provides access to valuable safety analysis tools, enabling users to gain insights and make informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

The portal also features a crash tabulation and charting tool, pre-built reports, data query and visualization, and a data extraction service, the agency said.

MassDOT said the crash data used by the portal is compiled by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, based on crash reports submitted by Massachusetts State Police and municipal police departments. By improving access to critical information, the IMPACT portal aims to foster a deeper understanding of crash trends and contribute to ongoing efforts to increase safety for all road users across the state, the agency noted.

Across the country, state departments of transportation are involved in a variety of efforts to reduce traffic crashes and the fatalities and injuries resulting from them.

For example, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation is involved in a multi-agency effort recently launched by Governor Kelly Ayotte (R).

The governor formed a new Highway Safety Task Force in response to a sharp rise in roadway fatalities and crashes across New Hampshire – noting that, in 2024 alone, 135 people died in motor vehicle crashes, with many of them involving alcohol or drugs.

“It’s critical that we ensure drivers are safe on our highways and stop these accidents before they happen. Every fatal crash is more than just a statistic—it’s a life lost, a family shattered, and a community forever changed,” she said in a statement.

“As a mom, this is especially important to me, which is why I am proud to announce today a new Highway Safety Task Force,” Gov. Ayotte noted. “I look forward to reviewing the Task Force’s recommendations to address issues like speeding, distracted driving, and wrong-way driving incidents to make our roads safer for Granite Staters.”

She noted that the new task force is charged with conducting a comprehensive review of crash data, identifying patterns and risk factors, evaluating current laws and enforcement practices, and developing a set of actionable recommendations to improve highway safety. It will also collaborate with local officials, law enforcement, traffic engineers, and community advocates to ensure a broad range of perspectives are represented in its findings, the governor said.
