Maryland DOT Building New ATC for Local Airport

The Maryland Aviation Administration – a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation – recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new air traffic control tower or ATC for Martin State Airport; a civil-military public use airport located roughly 10 miles east of the central business district of Baltimore.

The new ATC will replace the airport’s existing tower, originally built in 1942, to help improve aircraft visibility and accommodate personnel alongside modern air traffic management technologies.

With improved functionality and a larger facility, the $22.2 million project – funded by the Maryland Transportation Trust Fund and Federal Aviation Administration grants – will bolster safety and efficiency for both air traffic controllers and pilots, noted Paul Wiedefeld, outgoing secretary of the Maryland DOT.

“This new facility will be a beautiful architectural landmark that will take the airport’s business to new heights,” he said in a statement.

“This new tower will provide air traffic controllers with the facility they need to ensure safe and efficient operations in the coming decades,” added Shannetta Griffin, executive director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration. Construction of the new tower will take about 14 months, she noted.

In 2024, the agency helped complete the Runway 15-33 Rehabilitation Project at the airport – repaving and upgraded the airport’s runway with new airfield lighting and signage.
