KYTC Seeking Feedback on Statewide Rail Plan

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet or KYTC is putting the finishing touches on an updated version of the Kentucky Statewide Rail Plan, with the agency now planning virtual and in-person public meetings to gain feedback on the current draft as well as obtain insight into future statewide rail service enhancements.

The Kentucky Statewide Rail Plan is a “high-level guidance document” that provides a snapshot of current operations and opportunities to increase Kentucky’s economic growth and improve quality of life, the KYTC said.

The plan does not propose policy or funding recommendations but rather serves as “helpful resource” for private railroad companies seeking to expand or enhance rail services through federal grant opportunities.

“Whether you’re a rail user, a business owner or resident, your input matters to help plan the future of both passenger and freight rail in Kentucky,” said Jeremy Edgeworth, KYTC’s freight, rail, and waterways coordinator in a statement.

He added that the Kentucky Statewide Rail Plan will not only identify strategies for rail investments that are needed to increase Kentucky’s economic growth but also improve quality of life for all state residents as well as improve equity for the state’s most vulnerable and impacted communities.

“Good planning considers not just current needs but also anticipated growth and development, and we look forward to hearing the thoughts of rail enthusiasts throughout Kentucky,” Edgeworth noted.
