Hastings Nominated to be Delaware DOT Secretary

Delaware Governor-elect Matt Meyer (D) has nominated Shanté Hastings (above) to be the next secretary of the Delaware Department of Transportation. Hastings will be the acting secretary of the department on December 21; named to that position by outgoing Governor John Carney (D) to replace Nicole Majeski, who is officially stepping down as Delaware DOT’s secretary on that day.

“As a 25-year veteran of the Delaware DOT, Shanté knows how to keep people and goods moving safely across Delaware,” Gov.-elect Meyer said in a statement.

“Her institutional knowledge and expertise will be essential as we invest in Delaware’s infrastructure and continue building bikeable and walkable communities,” he added.

Prior to her nomination and acting secretary role, Hastings served as deputy secretary and chief engineer for the Delaware DOT. She also serves as the agency’s liaison with the Federal Highway Administration.

Hastings has worked at Delaware DOT since graduating from the University of Delaware in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. As chief engineer, she is responsible for managing the agency’s more than $600 million annual Capital Transportation Program. She is also involved with personnel management, legislation and national transportation policy in her role as deputy secretary.

In 2013, Hastings received the “Young Engineer of the Year” award from the Delaware Engineering Society in recognition of her work in the field of engineering and community service. She currently serves As the chair of the AASHTO Committee on Design, chair of AASHTO Innovation Management, and co-vice chair of the AASHTO Committee on Transportation System Operations.

Hastings also serves as a trustee of the University of Delaware and on the boards for the Delaware State Fair, the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, and Sussex Academy Charter School.
