Governor Ron DeSantis (R) recently highlighted the latest series of investments being made as part of an ongoing $20 billion effort to revitalize Florida’s Turnpike; a long-term project that is expanding capacity along the entire 320-mile mainline from South Florida through Central Florida to I-75 in Wildwood.

The governor noted in a statement that the most recent investments as part of that $20 billion effort – which is now 55 percent complete, he said – include $8.5 million to improve 19 restaurants and retail locations across six Turnpike service plazas, along with nearly $53.8 million to expand and improve truck parking across the system.

“As Florida has grown, we have made major investments in our transportation infrastructure to reduce congestion and improve our roadways,” Gov. DeSantis said. “We’ve made significant investments in expanding lane capacity to relieve congestion all along the Turnpike. We will keep working to ensure that our roadways are safer, more convenient, and better-maintained than ever before.”
“Transportation plays a direct role in the quality of life of Floridians, connecting people to jobs, opportunities, and the communities they call home,” added Jared Perdue, secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation.“The Turnpike System is a vital part of this, which is why we’ve made significant investments to continue expanding the Mainline.”
Florida DOT noted that as part of its “transformational plan” to widen the entire 320-mile Turnpike Mainline from South Florida to I-75 in Wildwood, every section of the Mainline across the state is being expanded to between six or more lanes. Once complete, those improvements will add more than 965 lane miles of capacity to help reduce congestion, giving families more time together and less time in traffic, the agency said.
Florida DOT pointed out that it has already added 384 lane miles across Florida’s Turnpike system, including 179 lane miles along the Turnpike Mainline, with the current investments focused on major widening projects in Central and South Florida, delivering additional capacity and improving travel reliability along some of the state’s busiest corridors.
The agency added that the “revitalization” of the Turnpike includes enhancements for truckers, with that $53.8 million parking investment slated to expand and improve nearly 150 spaces at Turkey Lake and Ocoee Service Plazas.
