The Federal Transit Administration is providing a $354.6 million grant to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District to help fund its West Lake Corridor Project: designed to improve transportation options for Indiana residents traveling to downtown Chicago and South Bend International Airport, while reducing travel time and spurring economic development.
The West Lake Corridor Project encompasses a 7.8-mile southern extension of the NICTD’s existing South Shore Line commuter rail service between Dyer and Hammond in Indiana plus the addition of four new train stations. The total project cost is $944.9 million with $354.6 million in funding committed through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants of CIG program.
“FTA is proud to join our partners in northern Indiana to improve public transportation and support economic recovery,” explained K. Jane Williams, FTA’s deputy administrator, in a statement.
“Commuters on the South Shore Line can now look forward to faster and more efficient transit service connecting them to major employers in Chicago, enhancing opportunities for Lake County residents while encouraging economic development locally,” she added.
She added that the “economic boost” this project will provide for Northern Indiana should help create jobs that will aid that region’s communities recover from the COVID-19 public health emergency
To date, FTA said it has advanced funding for 40 new CIG projects throughout the nation since January 2017, totaling approximately $10.7 billion in funding commitments.
