FHWA Issues $230M in Emergency Relief to States

On January 17, the Federal Highway Administration issued $229.9 million of emergency relief funding to 26 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico to support transportation infrastructure repair efforts initiated in the wake of natural disasters, catastrophic events, and extreme weather.

That $229.9 million consists of requests from state departments of transportation from September 2024 via FHWA’s Emergency Relief or ER program that could not be met at the time due to “limited program funding,” the agency said in a statement.

That funding will go toward ongoing repairs to infrastructure resulting from damage caused by Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole, flooding in California, mudslides in Vermont, and other natural disasters, FHWA noted.

That additional funding comes from the Continuing Appropriations Act and Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2025 signed into law on December 21, 2024, which included more than $8 billion of additional funding for the FHWA’s ER program to meet the outstanding September 2024 requests from state DOTs.
