In a statement, the FAA said AIG grants can be used for airport planning, development, sustainability, terminal expansions, baggage system upgrades, runway safety enhancements, and noise compatibility projects.

To date, the agency said nearly $12 billion of the $15 billion total of AIG funding made available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act or IIJA of 2021 has been made available to airports across all 50 states.

The agency made four AIG funding disbursements in 2024:

  • In August 2024, the FAA issued 296 AIG grants worth $566.4 million to help fund airport modernization projects in 47 states.
  • In June 2024, the agency awarded $187 million worth of grants to 90 infrastructure projects at 90 airports across 34 states via its AIG program to support improvements such as terminal expansions, baggage system upgrades, and runway safety enhancements.
  • Finally, FAA issued $76.1 million to 45 airport-related infrastructure projects in 22 states via the AIG program in May 2024 and $148.3 million in AIG funds to 73 airport-related infrastructure projects in 28 states and Guam in April 2024.

The AIG program is one of three aviation funding programs supported by the IIJA. Another is the Airport Terminal Program or ATP; a new program focused on making the passenger experience better, improving accessibility for passengers with disabilities, and supporting sustainability. The other is the Airport Improvement Program or AIP, which receives some $3.3 billion in federal funding each year.
