Delaware DOT Celebrates Anniversary of Millsboro Bypass

The Delaware Department of Transportation recently celebrated the first anniversary of the $140 million North Millsboro Bypass; a key roadway project designed to alleviate congestion and enhance safety in the area.

That project created a two-lane connector road that begins at Route 24 near Mountaire Farms and extends westward to connect with Route 113 north of Millsboro. The project included the construction of four bridges and an overpass, notably including a grade-separated interchange at the intersection of Route 113 and Route 20.

“We are quite pleased with the number of motorists embracing this new route,” said Shanté Hastings, Delaware DOT secretary, in a statement. “Some 8,000 vehicles now travel the bypass daily. That number increases to 10,000 per day during the summer months and includes over 1,300 tractor-trailers. We’ve not only reduced traffic congestion, but we’ve also improved safety, enhanced mobility and strengthened the quality of life for the residents and businesses within downtown Millsboro.”

In a separate announcement, Hastings noted that the Delaware Transportation Authority recently achieved the highest possible credit ratings from both S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Ratings ahead of its $92.4 million Series 2026 Transportation System Senior Revenue Bond sale scheduled for October 6; with proceeds from those bonds supporting projects within the agency’s Capital Transportation Program

“Achieving the highest possible credit ratings from both S&P and Moody’s is an incredible milestone for Delaware DOT and a reflection of decades of responsible financial management and thoughtful planning,” she said.

“This did not happen overnight,” Hastings stressed. “It reflects the work of many people over many years to protect the Transportation Trust Fund, responsibly manage our debt, and ensure we have the resources necessary to invest in Delaware’s transportation system. Most importantly, these ratings help us maximize every transportation dollar and put more of our resources toward the infrastructure Delawareans depend on.”
