Alabama Issues Latest Round of Local Road Funding

Governor Kay Ivey (R) (above) recently issued $3.9 million in grants to cities and counties for various road and bridge projects statewide; funding that comes from the Rebuild Alabama Act passed by the state legislature and signed by the governor in 2019.

The Rebuild Alabama Act required the Alabama Department of Transportation to establish an annual road funding program that sets aside a minimum of $10 million off the top of the state’s share of new fuel tax revenue for local projects.

“Rebuild Alabama has brought record progress to every single county across this state, and I am proud that we continue delivering road and bridge projects today,” said Gov. Ivey in a statement.

“The $3.9 million we are awarding will support local projects from the top of the state to the bottom,” she added. “As I have said many times, we are just getting started; the Ivey Administration will remain steadfast in our commitment to improving Alabama’s infrastructure.”

The Alabama DOT noted that cities and counties the received grants from this round of Rebuild Alabama funding also contributed a total of over $7 million in local matching funds. All projects are required to move forward within one year of the awarding of funds.

With this round of funding, for 2024 alone, more than $12 million in state transportation funding has been awarded through this annual grant program created by Rebuild Alabama, with another round of funding yet to come. Since the passage of the Rebuild Alabama five years ago, local projects in all of Alabama’s 67 counties have been awarded state transportation funding.
