The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, an equal opportunity employer, seeks to hire a senior technical editor; a full-time position located at its Washington, D.C., office.

The senior technical editor will aid AASHTO’s assistant director of publications in the production of AASHTO technical documents; working closely and collaboratively with the editorial team to provide editing, query development, layout, design, and printing/digital preparation of large, complex documents, including reviewing final proofs and assisting in the coordination and production of electronic publishing of technical publications.
This position also requires extensive communication with AASHTO committee members, vendors, and other AASHTO divisions to ensure technical accuracy as well as to expedite the passage of documents from the balloting process through to query responses and printing or online posting.
This job position requires the knowledge and use of MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Creative Suite (with InDesign being the main layout software used on a frequent basis), and Adobe Acrobat Pro software to produce primarily technical documents and occasionally marketing materials and presentations for technical committee meetings as needed.
This senior technical editor is also responsible for completing a variety of general administrative tasks in support of the production/editing projects assigned, including following the production procedures for electronic organization and project close-outs and assisting with member benefit transmittals, as needed.
Applicants should have five to seven years of technical and/or large book production experience using a variety of digital production processes. Previous association or non-profit work is desirable but not required. A bachelor’s degree in English or course work in any of the following: technical editing, design, publishing, printing, project management, and digital publishing/production is required.
Applicants must also understand the publication process – including editorial, desktop publishing, graphics experience, and digital preparation – and must have the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
