The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently issued the second edition of its Guide to Pavement Design, Construction, and Management – a publication that serves as a “one-stop shop” for pavement engineering, encompassing the fundamental principles of pavement types and materials while addressing the complexities of pavement management.

AASHTO said each chapter in the new guide focuses on a distinct facet of pavement engineering, including the foundational aspects of pavement structural design, construction, and maintenance. The guide also includes considerations for safety and preservation, as well as economic, environmental, and societal factors pertinent to pavement engineering.
This revised second edition incorporates advancements in pavement engineering since the release of the first edition in 2015, including:
- The use of novel materials, such as Type IL cement;
- Innovative material design methodologies like balanced mix design (BMD) and performance-engineered mixes (PEM); and
- Groundbreaking advancements in pavement analysis and structural testing, exemplified by the use of 3D laser equipment and traffic speed deflectometers.
This second edition also reflects enhancements in the AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software, as well as the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide: A Manual of Practice, 3rd Edition and the Guide for Pavement Friction, 2nd Edition.
To order a copy of this new pavement guide, visit the online AASHTO Store online and search by the publication’s item code PDCM-2 or visit the publication’s webpage on the AASHTO Store site by clicking here.
