That committee, which exists within the AASHTO Council on Highways and Streets, recommends actions regarding proposed revisions, additions, or deletions on the U.S. Numbered and Interstate Systems. The route numbering committee helps implement the U.S. Bicycle Route Numbering System, which exceeds more than 20,000 miles as of July with the addition of three new routes and the expansion of an existing route.

Byres graduated from New Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology. He initially worked as a consulting engineer on transportation, airport, and utility projects for 10 years, then went back to school at the University of Missouri–Rolla and then subsequently worked as a geotechnical materials engineering consultant for 10 years.

Byres then started his own engineering consulting firm, which provided design services for transportation, airports, utilities and development projects for both private and public sectors, for about 12 years.

After selling his firm, Byres moved to Arizona and began working for the Arizona DOT as a senior project manager 10 years ago, first as state roadway engineer and then as director of the agency’s multimodal planning division, before moving into his current role as deputy director and state engineer.
