The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently issued its latest survey of state-by-state investment in public transportation from federal, state, and local funding sources.

That new report – officially entitled the “Survey of State Funding for Public Transportation—Final Report 2025” – is based on fiscal year 2023 data and features a selection of innovative state funding initiatives and new case studies that highlight the efforts by states to apply state funding to support transit programs, beyond federal funding levels.
The report also addresses the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on state transit programs.
With the inclusion of numerous tables and charts, AASHTO said its latest public transportation the report explains how different funding and tax mechanisms are used to support transit operations and capital projects. Again, all data has been updated to reflect FY 2023 state and federal funding programs, as well as the latest ridership trends.
