The MUTCD defines the standards used by road managers nationwide to install and maintain traffic control devices on all streets and highways, as well as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, open to public travel.
The manual is a compilation of national standards for all traffic control devices, including road markings, highway signs, and traffic signals. Its purpose is to improve safety for all road users by promoting uniformity and to incorporate new provisions that reflect technological advances in traffic control device application.
Originally developed and published by the Federal Highway Administration in December 2023 as a “PDF Download Only” publication, the 11th edition of the MUTCD updates and supersedes the previous 10th Edition, which was published in 2009.
With over 1,200 pages, the AASHTO paperback version of the 11th edition of the MUTCD includes all of the information contained in FHWA’s PDF Download version – in its entirety – as well as several enhanced features:
- A comprehensive index of key reference topics;
- Exact color-matched graphics; and
- High-quality paper stock and a lay-flat binding, designed to withstand frequent and continued use.
