Governor Mike Dunleavy (R) established the Alaska Marine Highway Reshaping Work Group via an executive order to make recommendations regarding future finance and service levels for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS).

That effort follows on the heels of a 154-page report released by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities on January 16 for public review; a report that identifies potential reductions to the state’s financial obligation and/or liability as related to the AMHS.
“Using the resources of the reshaping study, the public, the three advisory boards, and their own personal knowledge and experience, I believe the recommendations of this work group will produce a balanced perspective for the future of the AMHS,” said John MacKinnon, commissioner of the Alaska DOT&PF, in a statement.
He added that the work group will consist of eight members and a chair, appointed by the governor, who will serve without compensation but will be reimbursed for travel and meeting expenses.
Recommendations from the work group are expected to be completed by September 30, with implementation expected to start by fiscal year 2023.
