The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently made $20 million worth of grants available via a notice of funding opportunity to spur the deployment of cutting-edge traffic safety enforcement innovations aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors on American roads.

Made available via NHTSA’s Innovative Traffic Safety Enforcement or ITSE program, grant funding supports investments by local law enforcement agencies in projects that develop, test, and validate innovations that combat dangerous driving behaviors including drug- and alcohol-impaired driving, distracted driving, lack of seatbelt use, speeding, and reckless driving.
The agency stressed that grant applicants are encouraged to incorporate evidence-based strategies – such as high-visibility enforcement and publicized checkpoints – into these initiatives.
NHTSA emphasized that local law enforcement agencies can use ITSE funding to invest in:
- Safety technologies that help to curb dangerous driving behaviors.
- Predictive data-driven analytics that better target deployment of law enforcement resources.
- Public-private partnerships designed to incentivize positive driving behavior.
- Specialized training to educate law enforcement on dangerous driving behaviors.
“We know that to reduce traffic fatalities significantly, we must equip law enforcement agencies with modern, scalable tools,” explained Jonathan Morrison, NHTSA administrator, in a statement.
“This new funding allows us to test and validate next-generation enforcement models that will become the proven safety countermeasures of tomorrow – using data-driven technology to stop risky driving behaviors before they lead to tragedy on our roadways,” he said.
