AASHTO Journal - Oklahoma DOT Updating Oklahoma Mobility Plan

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is launching an update to the Oklahoma Mobility Plan; an effort to strengthen public transit services statewide to ensure residents have access to safe, reliable, and coordinated transportation options.

The agency said in a statement that the Oklahoma Mobility Plan serves as a roadmap to guide public transportation and mobility investments, policies, and coordination efforts statewide for the next 20 years.

Oklahoma DOT noted that the updates to the plan aim to take a fresh look at the state’s existing transit system and work with communities to identify gaps in transportation and funding needs and develop recommendations, such as increased service frequency or greater reliability, to improve transit in urban, rural and tribal communities.

Throughout the planning process, Oklahoma DOT said it will engage with residents, community organizations, transit providers, businesses, tribal governments and other stakeholders through public meetings and outreach activities – with the first community partner group meeting scheduled for July 22.

The agency added that revisions to the plan are tentatively scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2027.

Several state departments of transportation took steps in recent months to expand mobility options in their respective regions of the country.

In June, the Illinois Department of Transportation celebrated the start of transit service in Henderson County by Warren County Public Transportation – a move that officially makes transit service available in all of the state’s 102 counties.

“Transit can take many forms, from buses and trains in big cities to dial-a-ride service in rural communities,” noted Gia Biagi, Illinois DOT secretary, at the time. “We’re proud to have worked with our local partners to provide an option to take transit in every county in Illinois.”

Meanwhile, in 2025, both the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of Transportation updated their respective statewide active transportation plans to give their residents more mobility options.
